Elle(s) vol. 1 by Kid Toussaint and Aveline Stokart

Description from MediaLab Public Relations:

ABLAZE proudly presents Elle(s), a vibrant, imaginative new series. Featuring brilliant, Pixar-esque art from Aveline Stokart, and an engaging story by Kid Toussaint that brings moments of real emotion, mystery, intrigue, and humor together during the epic highs and lows of high school.

Elle is just another teenage girl...most of the time. Bubbly and good-natured, she wastes no time making friends on her first day at her new school. But Elle has a secret: she hasn't come alone. She's brought with her a colorful mix of personalities, which come out when she least expects it... Who is Elle, really? And will her new friends stand by her when they find out the truth?

My Review:

I received a copy of this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review and let me just say...this was not long enough. I didn't know what to expect as I have not read anything by Kid Toussaint before, but I link the introduction to Elle and the other characters was done well and I really liked the art style by Aveline Stokart.

I will admit I am very picky about art. Not that I am a snob or think some art styles are better than others, but I have a preference for softer cuter styles. Elle(s) really stood out to me. I enjoyed how colorful it was and really liked that they changed the characters' outfits. Overall, it's not really pleasing to look at.

I loved how Elle was introduced. It was great to see how sassy and confident she is. I do wish we got to see her grow her friendships a bit more. I understand that the author wanted to introduce or hint at her other personalities sooner, but I felt things escalated a bit quickly with Otis. While the author tries to make up for it with snapshots of moments with her friends, it just wasn't enough for me. I think the transitions between personalities are fascinating and I cannot wait to explore this more in the next volume.

Overall, my only complaint is the pacing of the volume. As I mentioned I wish her friendships and time at her new school were explored a bit more, but I am still absolutely looking forward to reading the next volume. I am very curious about what else the author has planned for Elle.
